Islamist Conservatives in Pakistan opposing Maharaja Ranjit’s Statue

Pakistan, on the death anniversary of Maharaja Ranjit Singh the legendary Sikh emperor who ruled Punjab around four decades from 1801-39, unveils 8 foot statue of him at Mai Jindan Haveli, which was made for her youngest wife. The Pakistani government took 8 months to complete the 8 foot statue that weights around 250-330 kg. Despite of this generosity many Islamist conservatives are opposing the statue and are not happy which have unfortunately bound the Pakistani government to construct grills around the statue. Is this really make sense? a statue is made to represent the dignity of a person, to showcase it’s historical achievements, and if the statue would have to surround around grills then what is the purpose of making the statue if one can’t give respect.

Maharaja Ranjit Singh was born on Nov 13, 1780 Gujranwala, now in Pakistan, also known as “The Lion Of Punjab” when he successfully overthrew Misis from his provinces. His army was the most upgraded and well equipped as he uses the western as well as the Indian traditional methods of weapons, techniques and method to combat. During the second Anglo Sikh war in the Chillianwala, region his army killed the maximum number of British soldiers every recorded in the history of India.

For the civil officers, whose names have come up in the report, the action taken report says that Chief Secretary, Punjab, Karan Avtar Singh has been asked to initiate disciplinary action against them as per the recommendations of the commission and complete the same within 90 days.

However, no names have been taken of any officers in the Action Taken Report (ATR). The names of officers — then Chief Secretary Sarvesh Kaushal, then PS to CM S K Sandhu and then special PS to CM, Gaggandip Singh Brar, appear only in the final report of the Commission. The officers also include 10 junior-rank officers.

Former Punjab chief minister Parkash Singh Badal has been named in the supplementary report of the Justice Ranjit Singh Commission for his “apparent involvement” in the police action on anti-sacrilege protesters at Kotkapura about three years ago.

The supplementary report, submitted on August 16, after the report had been leaked and the government drew flak over not naming the Badals as accused, now says, “…earlier the commission had in its report observed that the facts might indicate the involvement of the CMO, but it is now clear that the Chief Minister and the CMO were apparently kept in the loop about the action proposed by the police and the action finally taken at Kotkapura. This supplementary report may be read in conjunction with the findings and observations recorded by the Commission from pages 50-55”.

A country of India in which if anybody insulted anybody’s scripture, then life sentence would be life imprisonment.

In one country of the country, such a law has been created, under which if any religious literature is insulted then life sentence can be punished. Yes, these laws have passed in Punjab state

According to the news, the cabinet of the Punjab Government, on Tuesday, drafted the draft Bill of Proposals for the Indian Penal Code (IPC and Criminal Procedure Code (CRPC) with the intention of making provision for life imprisonment for convicts for disrespecting religious texts. In this regard, CM Amarinder Singh informed the media persons also.

An official spokesman of the state government said that the government has taken a major step in controlling such incidents in the state and maintaining communal harmony. He said that this decision was taken in a meeting chaired by Chief Minister Amarinder Singh

“The Cabinet has approved the withdrawal of the CRPC (Punjab Amendment) Bill-2013 and the IPC (Punjab Amendment) Bill-2016 passed in the 12th session of the 14th Assembly, in the coming session of the Punjab Assembly, the CRPC (Punjab Amendment) Bill-2018 and IPC (Punjab Amendment) Bill- 2018. The Cabinet has also approved the introduction of several other bills in the House in the forthcoming session of the Legislative Assembly given permission.

It is to this day that in Punjab the provision of punishment for life imprisonment on the disrespect of Guru Granth Sahib, the holy book of Sikhism. Later, the central government, while expressing their objections over the amendment, told the state government that sentence of life imprisonment can not be confined to the insult of a holy book of one religion, but it should be applied in the case of insults of the texts of every religion.

There have been some incidents of dishonor of religious texts in Punjab in recent years and this election was made in the assembly elections last year and now it has become a law in Punjab.
